Lena Dee is the Artistic Director and Rehearsal Director for BCDCY. Lena formed the company in 2011 after the former Berkshire Youth Dance Company (BYDC) dispersed as the youth-led company former dancers went on to full time training.
“I felt that there was something missing from the dance training in the area once BYDC finished. The county level company offered such great experiences for young dancers and gave them a truely unique insight into how professional dance companies work. I started BCDCY to bring back those opportunities and am proud to say many of the former company have been back to work with the next generation of dancers.
My aim is to offer dance training at professional level and expose the dancers to the high standards expected in full time training as well as learning their craft as a performer, choreographer and member of a company. To date, the companies we have worked with have been exceptional and the dancers, friends, families and dance companies themselves often comment on how professional the company are.
I am also keen to bring talent back to the local area and am proud of the connections we have with ex-dancers from the company coming back to lead sessions and choreograph on the new company. This experience is so valuable to the new dancers and they can take away so much understanding of the industry and make decisions about their future plans based on this insider knowledge.
I am very proud of how far we have come and plan to build on our reputation and widen the dancers dance experiences to stand them in good stead for their auditions and journey through full time training to a career in dance.”
Lena often leads BCDCY through class and creates work on them with the focus on nurturing their creative skills and giving all dancers the confidence to create and perform their own choreography. Her dance training includes The Royal Academy of Dancing, Laine Theatre Arts and University of Surrey majoring in Choreography and Dance Management. Her background in teaching includes many schools and youth groups as well as working with pre-schoolers through to dancers in their 80′s.
Lena Dee is also the Director of Lift Off Dance Festival which takes place each Spring at South Hill Park. Her background in events covers over 20 years of experience including managing events at The Royal Opera House, Dance Umbrella, The Place, IMG Artists, The BBC and the first Woking Dance Festival.
